The brain consists of billions of interconnected neurons. When a single neuron fires, it creates an almost imperceptible amount of electrical charge. An EEG measures electrical activity in the brain by detecting it via contacts on the scalp. As a medical instrument it has long been used to diagnose conditions like epilepsy and dementia as well as determining whether a patient in a coma is brain dead. Brain electrical activity is cyclic in nature, hence the name brainwave. Waves within particular ranges of frequencies, like “alpha” or “beta” waves, have various types of biological significance.

A brainmap gives a quick overview of the functional state of the brain. The brainmap above shows five coloured ovals displaying the distribution in the brain of five types of brain waves. The oval in the upper left corner actually shows a combination of Beta2 and Gamma frequencies. Each oval shows the brain seen from above, and the little tip at the top indicates the location of the nose. Each of the five ovals only displays one type of brain wave, however, all five types of waves are measured at the same time and at the same locations on the brain.

In the early 1970s, working closely with one of his students, an electronics engineer by the name of Geoffrey Blundell, designed a multi-channel electroencephalograph (EEG) device that could look at the relationship of the beta, alpha, theta and delta rhythms of each brain hemisphere and display these simultaneously on a graph on an external monitor. Hooked up to this device people could see instantly how their thinking directly affected the quality of their brainwave patterns and the quality of their physiology.

One of his main points of interest was studying the brainwave patterns of the most highly accomplished Zen monks, Swamis and Lamas he could make contact with. After studying dozens of such individuals, a highly coherent brainwave pattern began to show a universal state of enlightenment shared by every master.

Brain-Computer interfaces use EEG signals which can be controlled by the user. These types of EEG signals fall into two main classes; evoked responses which are EEG components evoked by a specific sensory stimulus, such as a flashing light, and spontaneous EEG signals which consist of EEG components that occur without stimulus, such as the alpha rhythm or the mu rhythm. Note, however, that some spontaneous EEG signals such as the mu rhythm can be affected by stimuli.

Our ability to produce at will strong spontaneous EEG mind rhythms such as the Theta rhythm or the mu rhythm can be enhanced by the use of eeg systems. This is a process where by we the user is given an indication as to how well he/she is controlling the brain wave patterns (eg. by looking at them). This constitutes the `feedback'.
