MICRO-CURRENT
ON PAIN CONTROL AND HEALING
By Gerald H. Smith D.D.S.
We now know the body has a micro-current "circulatory
system" that provides intercellular communication
through electromagnetic signaling. Becker has documented
that our bodies present a positive polarity along the
central axis and a negative polarity in the peripheral
structures. He has also shown that this polarity is reversed
in hypnosis, during anesthesia and following an injury
which creates a positive potential at the site of trauma.
Becker has speculated this polarity reversal sets up
a current of injury that initiates and signals the beginning
of tissue repair and regeneration. Doctor Becker believes
this current of injury is conducted by means of direct
micro-current signals past along the Schwann and Glial
cell sheaths that surround the neurons.
The internationally known radiologist and
researcher, Bjorn Nordenstrom, describes tissues as biologic
batteries in our body. This concept is well known and
accepted by many researchers. Nordenstrom believes that
an electrical voltage potential difference exists in
the body that is created by a separation of oppositely
charged ions. He states that the electrical energy of
this biologic battery can be tapped once its closed.
The closed circuit permits the flow of electricity between
oppositely charged areas. In his book on bioelectricity,
Nordenstrom describes the activation of these biological
semiconductor circuits following muscle activity and
injuries both of which cause a build-up of positively
charged ions. Researchers have benefited greatly from
the discovery that the body functions in a micro-current
level. Scientific studies utilizing micro-currents have
documented its ability to reduce pain, stimulate and
even shorten the healing process.

endorphins, a natural pain reliever
|
|
|
|
Endorphins, because of their analgesic
medication type action, induces an analgesic effect that
relieves other aches and pains, as well as the primary
pain for which VARIABLE FREQUENCY TENS/CES. is applied.
It is worth noting that Morphine is a clone of endorphin
and acts on the same reception center in the CNS.
The strong pain management effect of morphine
is also available from endorphins, which have a more
powerful pain management effect than non-opiate advanced
medication. An endorphin release occurs at a slow, deferred
function similar in effect to medication in the blood
stream, so repeated three times daily doses of VARIABLE
FREQUENCY tens/ces. pain management may be required.
The effect of an endorphin release may last much longer
in the elderly.

Pressure exerted on nerve tissue is the
major cause of pain. Pain is an exceptionally strong
signal that warns us that something is wrong. It may
be a signal recorded from our skin touch receptors and
from internal receptors located in our muscles, joints
and organs. Pain warnings are necessary for our survival,
as they activate our body to protect us from danger.
However, when pain persists and we know its cause, we
are able to apply therapy to the pressure causing the
problem, and stimulation to alleviate the pain we are
caused to feel from the pressure upon nerves. As many
people develop cycles of "pain-spasm-more pain," the
breaking of a pain cycle enables the body to recover
more rapidly.
For various reasons, pain-killing medication
is not always acceptable. Another option for pain relief
is a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator (TENS
machine). TENS machines deliver small electrical pulses
to the body via electrodes placed on the skin. This is
thought to help ease pain. The research evidence to support
the use of TENS machines is moderately strong, but they
seem to be very popular with people who have pain.
The One Acupuncture Point
Everyone Should Know?
Sustained stimulation at low levels of
pulse intensity has a strong effect on managing chronic
nagging pain. Experience has shown that for the management
of chronic pain, an endorphin release is by far the most
effective application of VARIABLE FREQUENCY TENS/CES..
Endorphins flow through the circulatory system acting
like pain medication, inhibiting pain message transmission
at nerve junctions throughout the body.

For some people, a transcutaneous electrical
nerve stimulation (TENS) machine is used as an
alternative to painkilling medication. A TENS
machine is a small portable, battery-operated
device which is worn on the body. The box is
attached by wires to sticky pads stuck to the
skin. Small electrical pulses are transmitted
to the body, like little electric pulses. This
can help to ease pain in some people with certain
types of pain. Although there is not much robust
proof that TENS machines work, many people do
find them very helpful. The advantage is that
TENS is well tolerated and largely without side-effects.

TENS Tips |
There is nothing “magic” about Transcutaneous Electrical
Nerve Stimulation (TENS). TENS machines are intended to be used to
relieve pain. The TENS unit sends comfortable impulses through the
skin that stimulate the nerve (or nerves) in the treatment area.
In many cases, this stimulation will greatly reduce or eliminate
the pain sensation the patient feels. Pain relief varies by individual
patient, mode selected for therapy, and the type of pain. In many
patients, the reduction or elimination of pain lasts longer than
the actual period of stimulation (sometimes as much as three to four
times longer). In others, pain is only modified while stimulation
actually occurs.
TENS machines are most commonly used
for people with musculoskeletal pain, such as chronic
(long-term) back pain or knee joint arthritis. They
are also often used for pain relief in the early stages
of labour, particularly whilst a pregnant woman remains
at home. Other less common uses include migraine headaches,
period pains, sports injuries and sometimes (quite
rarely) non-painful conditions such as tiredness, insomnia
or dementia.
TENS machines can be used alone for pain
relief, or be combined with other treatments. The use
of a TENS machine might allow reduction of the amount
of painkilling medicines you take. Although you might
need to try a few settings on your TENS machine before
finding the best one for you, there are no real side-effects
from using a TENS machine. A TENS machine might be
worth a trial, particularly if conventional pain relief
methods have been tried and exhausted.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation
(TENS): TENS unit can be used at home for relieving pain
on a long term basis. It allows the user to adjust the
intensity of the stimulation, select high frequency stimulation
or low frequency stimulation. High frequency stimulation
is called conventional which is tolerable for hours but
results in pain relief for shorter period of time. Whereas,
low frequency stimulation is called acupuncture- like
which results in pain relief for longer period of time.
TENS unit users can also use electrode placements by
placing the electrodes over the painful area or over
the nerve supplying the painful area or even on the opposite
side of the body
A systematic review
evaluating the effectiveness of TENS in chronic pain
found that in 13 of 22 inactive control (placebo) studies,
there was a positive analgesic outcome in favour of
active TENS treatments (Nnoaham and Kumbang, 2008).

Transcutaneous Electrostimulation: Emerging
Treatment for Diabetic Neuropathic Pain
Michael Alvaro, Dinesh Kumar, Inderjeet S. Julka
Three independent studies utilizing transcutaneous electrical
nerve stimulation to relieve diabetic peripheral neuropathic
pain were reviewed. The propietary equipment, an H-wave
machine, administered all electrotherapy. The first
two studies assessed the efficacy of electrotherapy
alone and electrotherapy with amitriptyline. The treated
electrotherapy group reported an overall greater reduction
of symptoms, 52% with 2-3 weeks of active treatment.
Amitriptyline alone produced a 26% reduction of pain
after 4 weeks. The addition of active electrotherapy
to amitriptyline produced a 66% reduction of pain.
The final study looked at patients who have utilized
electrotherapy for over one year. A reported 44% improvement
of symptoms was attained with continuous electrotherapy
treatment. The data also suggested that a maintenance
treatment protocol for long-term pain relief would
have to be developed.
