WHEN YOUR BRAIN CANNOT SWITCH
OFF
THE ELECTRICAL SCIENCE OF ANXIETY
Anxiety can begin with something incredibly
small.
A
thought.
A
memory.
A
telephone call.
A
bill.
Tomorrow's
appointment.
Or simply two words:
“WHAT
IF?”
Yet within seconds, that tiny thought
can produce very real changes throughout the body.
Your heart beats faster.
Your breathing
changes.
Your muscles tighten.
Your stomach feels different.
Your thoughts begin racing.
Sleep suddenly seems impossible.
Something fascinating has happened.
A thought has become
a physical event.
And understanding how that happens
may completely change the way we think about anxiety.
🧠 YOUR BRAIN WAS
BUILT TO KEEP YOU ALIVE
Imagine one of our distant ancestors
walking through a forest.
Suddenly there is movement in the
bushes.
A
predator?
This is not the time for philosophical
contemplation.
The brain needs to react.
Fast.
Networks involved in detecting possible
danger activate the body's survival systems.
Heart rate can increase.
Breathing
changes.
Muscles prepare for action.
Attention becomes focused on the threat.
Stress hormones
help prepare the body to respond.
FIGHT. FLIGHT. OR
FREEZE.
It is an extraordinary biological
system.
And for countless generations it helped
keep human beings alive.
But there is a problem.

🐅 THE TIGER DOESN'T
HAVE TO BE REAL
The human brain developed another
remarkable ability.
IMAGINATION.
We can remember yesterday.
We can imagine tomorrow.
We can rehearse events that have never
happened.
Usually that is enormously useful.
But the nervous system can sometimes
react to an imagined threat in ways resembling its response
to a physical one.
There may be no tiger.
No attacker.
No immediate danger whatsoever.
There may only be a thought:
“What
if something goes wrong?”
And yet the heart starts racing.
The muscles tighten.
The stomach churns.
Sleep disappears.
The danger exists in thought...
BUT
THE BODY'S RESPONSE IS REAL.
⚡ ANXIETY ISN'T ONLY
“IN YOUR HEAD”
We often speak about anxiety as though
it were simply excessive thinking.
But anxiety involves much more than
thoughts.
It involves interacting networks throughout
the brain and body.
The
autonomic nervous system.
Stress hormones.
Breathing.
Heart
rate.
Muscle tension.
Attention.
Sleep.
And something particularly interesting
for those of us fascinated by frequency:
THE
BRAIN IS AN ELECTROCHEMICAL ORGAN.
Billions of neurons communicate using
electrical and chemical signalling.
Every
sensation.
Every
movement.
Every
memory.
Every
thought.
All emerge from this extraordinary
biological signalling system.
Which
raises an intriguing question.
⚡ IF THE BRAIN USES
ELECTRICAL SIGNALS...
CAN SMALL EXTERNAL ELECTRICAL SIGNALS
INFLUENCE BRAIN ACTIVITY?
Scientists have been investigating
that question for decades.
Today an entire field of research
is devoted to neuromodulation — methods designed to influence nervous-system activity.
One of the simplest approaches is
called:
CRANIAL ELECTROTHERAPY STIMULATION
CES
CES devices deliver very small electrical
currents through electrodes placed on the head, often around
the ears.
The currents are tiny compared with
the electricity we normally encounter in everyday appliances.
Researchers have investigated CES
in relation to:
🧠 Anxiety
😴 Sleep
🌧️ Depression
symptoms
🧘 Relaxation and
stress
The idea is not that electricity somehow
“erases” anxious thoughts.
The scientific question is subtler:
Can
gentle electrical stimulation influence neural activity
associated with the way the brain regulates arousal,
mood and anxiety?
🔬 SO WHAT DOES
THE SCIENCE ACTUALLY SAY?
This is where things become interesting.
Rather than relying on testimonials,
we can look at randomized controlled trials — and then at
researchers who combine those trials in systematic reviews
and meta-analyses.
A major 2022
systematic review and meta-analysis examined 11 randomized controlled trials involving 794 participants overall.
Its analysis found that CES produced
a statistically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms
compared with control conditions.
The overall effect was described by
the researchers as moderate.
Importantly, the researchers also
reported that CES was generally well tolerated in the included
studies.
🔬 THEN CAME ANOTHER
META-ANALYSIS
In 2023 another research team examined
randomized controlled trials specifically involving people
whose predominant problem was anxiety.
They identified:
8
randomized controlled trials
337
participants
Again, CES was associated with significantly
lower anxiety severity than control treatment.
That analysis also examined depression
and insomnia symptoms among people presenting with anxiety
and reported statistically significant improvements.
So we now have something considerably
more interesting than an isolated experiment.
MULTIPLE
RANDOMIZED TRIALS HAVE BEEN COLLECTED AND ANALYSED TOGETHER.
And collectively they provide evidence
that CES deserves serious scientific attention.
⚠️ BUT
THERE IS AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE
There is an enormous difference between saying:
“CES has been shown to cure anxiety.”
and saying:
“Controlled
clinical research suggests CES may reduce anxiety symptoms.”
The second statement reflects the
evidence much more accurately.
Studies have used different devices,
currents, frequencies, treatment schedules and patient groups.
Some trials have been relatively small.
And even positive meta-analyses cannot
tell us that every person will respond.
SCIENCE
ISN'T ABOUT BELIEVING.
IT
IS ABOUT MEASURING.
😴 AND THEN THERE
IS SLEEP
Anyone who has experienced anxiety
probably knows the peculiar cruelty of lying in bed exhausted...
while the
brain has apparently decided that 2:17 AM is the perfect time to solve every problem you have ever had.
😄
The body wants sleep.
But the alarm system is still listening.
The 2023 CES meta-analysis also examined
insomnia outcomes.
Only three trials provided suitable
insomnia data, involving a much smaller number of participants,
so this evidence needs more research.
Nevertheless, the combined result favored CES.
That creates another interesting research
question:
IF
WE CAN HELP REDUCE EXCESSIVE AROUSAL, MIGHT SLEEP SOMETIMES
IMPROVE AS WELL?
Researchers are continuing to investigate
exactly these relationships.
🧠 PERHAPS WE HAVE
BEEN ASKING THE WRONG QUESTION
For generations we separated the mind
from the body.
Thought belonged to psychology.
The heart belonged to cardiology.
The nerves belonged to neurology.
Hormones belonged to endocrinology.
But the living human being never agreed
to these divisions.
Everything communicates.
Thought can change breathing.
Breathing can influence arousal.
Fear can accelerate the heart.
Sleep can change emotional regulation.
Electrical activity helps neurons
communicate.
Chemical signals modify electrical
activity.
THE
HUMAN BODY IS NOT A COLLECTION OF SEPARATE PARTS.
IT
IS A COMMUNICATING SYSTEM.
⚡ THE BIG SCIENTIFIC
SHIFT
Perhaps one of the most interesting
developments in modern medicine is the increasing investigation
of ways to influence the nervous system directly.
Not simply through chemicals...
but through:
⚡ Electrical stimulation
🧲 Magnetic stimulation
🔊 Sound and vibration
💡 Light
🎵 Sensory stimulation
Researchers call much of this field neuromodulation.
The technologies are very different
from one another and the evidence varies enormously between
applications.
But they share a fascinating underlying
idea:
BIOLOGY
RESPONDS TO SIGNALS.
And some of those signals can be physical
rather than pharmaceutical.
🌿 AN INFORMED CHOICE
But people deserve accurate information
about the choices being investigated.
The evidence does not tell
us:
“CES works for everybody.” nothing works for everyone!!!
But randomized controlled trials and
modern meta-analyses do tell us something worth knowing:
VERY
SMALL ELECTRICAL CURRENTS APPLIED TO THE HEAD HAVE BEEN
STUDIED SCIENTIFICALLY — AND THE COLLECTIVE RESULTS FOR
ANXIETY ARE PROMISING.
PERHAPS THE REAL QUESTION IS...
For more than a century medicine has
become extraordinarily sophisticated at changing the chemistry
of the human body.
But the nervous system also communicates
electrically.
So perhaps the next great chapter
of medicine will not be:
CHEMISTRY
OR ELECTRICITY.
Perhaps it will be understanding how
both work together.
Because beneath every thought...
every movement...
every heartbeat...
and every
moment of awareness...
there is
an astonishing conversation taking place inside us.
A
CONVERSATION OF CHEMISTRY, ELECTRICITY AND LIFE.
And we are only beginning to understand
its language.

significant anxiety findings. PubMed Central (PMC)

Rife Machines
Rife discovered that
every virus, bacterium, parasite and other pathogen
is particularly sensitive to a specific "frequency" of
sound and can be destroyed by intensifying that frequency
until it literally explodes - like an intense musical
note that can
shatter a wine glass! To "disintegrate" the microbes, Rife invented a Beam Ray machine (now known as a Rife machine)
