Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF)
therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses electromagnetic
fields to stimulate cellular
activity and promote healing in various tissues. While PEMF
therapy has been extensively studied and utilized in human
medicine, its application in veterinary medicine has gained
significant attention in recent years. From enhancing bone
healing to alleviating pain and inflammation, PEMF therapy
is becoming an increasingly popular tool in the care and
rehabilitation of animals.
Beloved pets like humans can suffer from painful
and chronic conditions that affect bones, joints, tendons,
skin, nerves and spinal cord plus other hard and soft tissues
in the body.
"Some of the first introductions of
magnet healing in the United States began in animals with their use
in horses. Later, pulsed magnetic fields were introduced as well for
horses.
At
a conference put on by the North American Academy of Magnetic Therapy
several years ago, a veterinarian presented her experience in using
static magnets in horses. She was able to achieve dramatic results,
often saving horses from surgery and/or being euthanized. Increasing
numbers of veterinarians are using both static and pulsed magnetic
fields in their practices. " |
In general, PEMF can be used to speed healing, reduce inflammation, and lower
pain levels In pets. The powerful 7000 Gauss PEMFPulsar field penetrates clothing,
fur and plaster casts to reach all the tissue in the target area.
Cellular Stimulation: PEMF therapy enhances ion exchange
across cell membranes, which can increase cellular energy
(ATP) production and improve cell function. This is particularly
beneficial in repairing damaged tissues and promoting
cellular regeneration. |

Electromagnetic fields cause a chemical reaction, which activates
well-known Nitric Oxide cycles. Nitric Oxide is a key molecule in
healing humans and animals. The compound is released when we exercise,
and
when we are injured, for the body to naturally repair itself.Iincreases
Nitric Oxide production help speed healing of soft and hard tissues-
that includes skin, tendons, ligaments, bones and organs. You can read some Scientic info here |
"By increasing the production
of nitric oxide in pets and humans when
its production is impaired or its bioavailability is
reduced, PEMF
therapy can successfully help improve conditions and
diseases, including those associated with vasoconstriction
(e.g., coronary vasospasm, elevated systemic vascular
resistance, hypertension), thrombosis due to platelet
aggregation and adhesion to vascular endothelium,
Improved Blood Circulation: By affecting the electrical
charges of blood cells, PEMF therapy can improve blood
flow, which enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients
to tissues, accelerates healing, and reduces swelling. |
inflammation due
to upregulation of leukocyte and
endothelial adhesion molecules, vascular hypertrophy and
stenosis, and consequently hypertension, obesity,
dyslipidemias (particularly hypercholesterolemia and Any
illness which is caused by inflammation may be successfully
treated.
Reduction of Inflammation: PEMF therapy modulates the
production of inflammatory cytokines and increases the
production of anti-inflammatory agents, leading to a
reduction in inflammation and pain. |

A recent study on postoperative
recovery led to the conclusion that PEMF therapy significantly reduced
postoperative pain and narcotic use in the immediate
postoperative period by means of a PEMF effect on n

It is not known how PEMF therapy acts on nerve tissue, but
multiple cases of degenerative nerve conditions have shown to improve or
resolve with the
use of the PEMFPulser, twice a day over the course of a few
months. In some cases improvement is sooner..
"PEMF therapy has been used extensively for decades for many
health issues, and results can be seen in animals as well as humans. The
National Institutes of Health have made PEMF therapy a priority for
research.
In fact, the FDA has already Registered, Regulated or Approved many PEMF
devices, some specifically to fuse broken bones, enhance wound healing, reduce
pain and tissue swelling, support muscle function, and also to treat depression.

Published Studies On Use Of PEMF To Promote Healing In Animals
"Electromagnetic fields are now being used in many diseases such as osseous,
ligamental, cartilaginous, or nervous reparation, diabetes, and myocardial
or cerebral ischemia. Although many publications show the usefulness of magneto-therapy,
discrepancies exist about the utility of electromagnetic fields in skin wound
healing. The objective of this work was to study the effect of pulsed
electromagnetic fields on wound healing in rats. The results suggest a significant beneficial
stimulation in the wound healing process in rats treated with PEMF, which
could lead to the development of a practical tool for research and clinical
use."1996The American Burn Association
Low frequency pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) can provide
noninvasive, safe and easy to apply method to treat pain, inflammation and
dysfunctions associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis
(OA) and PEMF has a long term record of safety. This review focusses on the
therapeutic application of PEMF in the treatment of these forms of
arthritis.
The analysis of various studies (animal models of arthritis,
cell culture systems and clinical trials) reporting the use of PEMF for arthritis
cure
has conclusively shown that PEMF not only alleviates the pain in the arthritis
condition but it also affords chondroprotection, exerts antiinflammatory
action and helps in bone remodeling and this could be developed as a viable
alternative for arthritis therapy.Indian journal of experimental biology

Reduction in symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (Guseo 1987) Research
into these and other areas have shown good rates of success, with
no detrimental side effects. For optimum results, low-frequency sustained
pulsed magnetic fields should be applied, with specific problems responding
best to specific frequencies.

Pulsed
electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy has been used with success
in delayed or nonunion of bone fractures. Its use in the treatment of wound healing
is less established. This review article looks at the use of PEMF and its
effect on wound healing. The mechanism by which PEMF works is not completely
understood, but research has demonstrated its effect on decreasing inflammation
through modulation of the calcium/calmodulin/nitrous oxide pathways, the
stimulation of the production of growth factors, and its effect on angiogenesis. Several
animal studies have demonstrated improved wound healing with the
use of PEMF. This has led to a limited number of double-blind, randomized
controlled studies. These studies demonstrate a trend towards improved
wound healing;
"German shepherd dogs are noted for suffering symptoms which resemble
those of Multiple Sclerosis. In the UK, some success has been achieved
by treating
these symptoms with pulsed magnetic field therapy. There is also evidence
from research that nerve regeneration has been achieved under the influence
of pulsed magnetic fields"
*"PEMF is recommended as a non-invasive remedy, lacking any adverse
effects, useful for controlling pain and inflammation associated
with osteoarthritis.
The majority of dogs improved with respect to their lameness and pain and
the benefits lasted without use of anti-inflammatory drugs!"* This
was the conclusion of the study of the effects of PEMF on osteoarthritis
in dogs presented at
the European Society of Veterinary Orthopaedics
and Traumatology Congress in 2010.
A multidisciplinary approach to the study of peripheral nerve
regeneration in the cat has been presented. The purpose of this work has been to determine
if pulsing electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy can enhance peripheral
nerve regeneration after injury. In equal groups of animals, two types
of pulsing electromagnetic field treatment were compared with untreated
controls. All animals underwent quantitative electro physiologic and morphologic
assessment at the area of injury. In addition, muscle fibre sizing in the
periphery and retrograde labeling of anterior horn motoneurons with horseradish
peroxidase were studied. Results have shown no statistical differences between
the groups in electro physiologic or morphologic parameters. However, in
animals treated with a pulse-burst electromagnetic field there was a statistically
significant improvement in the labeling and localization of anterior horn
cells in the central nervous system. These results indicate that
pulse-burst electromagnetic fields can increase the numbers of motor neurons
that
re-establish appropriate connections to the periphery after nerve injury. Orgel MG,

PEMF is regularly used on older pets with great success. Pets
that have arthritis, difficulty getting up, climbing stairs,
etc..., on post-surgical healing; on orthopedic injuries etc... Any time
you use anti-inflammatory or pain medication for your pet,
try PEMF ?.? By increasing cell metabolism, oxygenation and nutrient absorption,
PEMF can be used for a variety of issues, even problems with the skin and coat,
as well as for strengthening the immune system and reducing allergies.
The "Placebo Effect"
A testament to PEMF Therapy's ability to effectively promote the health and
healing of pets is the fact that much of what we have learned about its ability
to enhance human health was first discovered via small animal research.
The placebo effect does not exist in the non-human animal world, thus adding
scientific credibility and validity to PEMF's health enhancing impact on
the small animals tested.
Because animals have a higher metabolic rate than humans, their responses
to PEMF treatment are often much more dramatic!
PEMF resolves Incontinence in Pets... and People!
"
Another study found that PEMF can resolve many cases of incontinence... Was
it just a placebo effect? Not when dogs, as well as humans, are resolving
the problem, sometimes within a few days at an extraordinarily high rate.
Not when denervated muscle
(like in stroke or neurological disease/injury) retains its bulk and contractile
strength.
PEMF exposure can work wonders with incontinence."
Dr. Rowen's Second Opinion
Dogs with Enlarged Prostate
Here is an example of the kinds of studies being done on pets using PEMF...
with great results!
In the University of Bari, Italy study, researchers used PEMF on 20 dogs
with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (enlarged prostate) for 3 weeks,
providing treatments twice a day for five minutes each. After 3 weeks, they
reported that prostate gland size decreased by an average of 57 percent!
In addition to the observed efficacy, researchers said their study showed
that PEMF does not negatively impact reproductive aspects such as
libido, semen quality, or testosterone, as traditional forms of therapy for
BPH are
sometimes known to do and required no surgery or drugs. Because of its non-invasive
nature, scientists reported that the use of PEMF even keeps dogs calm and
relaxed throughout the process. The treatment's
safety and efficacy demonstrated in dogs suggests the potential for similar
results in humans...
Therapy for Horses: Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy has become a
popular and effective treatment modality in equine medicine.
Horses, especially those involved in competitive sports like
racing, show jumping, and dressage, often suffer from various
musculoskeletal issues, injuries, and chronic conditions
that can impact their performance and well-being. PEMF therapy
offers a non-invasive, drug-free solution to support healing,
enhance performance, and maintain overall health in horses.
It is always a good idea to first get your vet's diagnosis
and we recommend that you you ask them about PEMF, but don't be surprised
if they have never heard of it. Most vets did not learn about PEMF in vet
school and may not be aware of this option. Thankfully, you can offer your
pet PEMF treatments safely and easily right at home without risks or side
effects.
"Once a diagnosis has been made, pulsed
magnetic field therapy is simple to apply and can safely
be administered by the owner. This means
that treatment can be given more than once a day on a regular
basis– thus
speeding up the rate of healing."
Magnetic
therapy can be used alone or
in conjunction with other modes of therapy, both traditional
and natural. And we are here to offer help...
PEMF's
can be used over acupuncture points, apparently helping to stimulate the
points.
The main indications for PEMF therapy seems to be musculoskeletal problems
such as arthritis in joints such as elbows, knees & as
well as with back problems and hip dysplasia.
A few clients who have used
the PEMF

that it has made a big difference in their pain relief and
their energy levels and their ease
of getting up and down and walking better. Send PEMF

Many of my horse
patients have definitely improved with PEMF on their backs
and around tendons. Some are
very pleased with their PEMF tools. They can be used
in most pets with tendon and ligament injuries. Studies have
shown that PEMF units have helped heal
non healing fractures and poorly healing wounds in humans
and animals.
Create some quiet time with you canine or feline companion
and hold the PEMFpulser paddle
in place over the effected area while you pet them and enjoy your moments
together. For small animal companions, the Magnacoils or Blanket on the RifePro are
probably the best options. The pulsed electromagnetic fields are powerful,
and are often used by vets, or some horse owners may have them if they have
multiple horses. Now you can own these powerfull healing tools, for your
pet...
How can I get PEMF therapy for my cat or dog (and me!)? You
can safely and easily treat your dog or cat, as well as your whole family,
at home with your own PEMF System from Altered States! Purchasing your own
PEMF System can often be a much more affordable alternative to expensive and
invasive surgeries and costly medications for your pets, PLUS, Everyone
in the family can benefit, pets
and people.
Conclusion
PEMF therapy represents a promising and versatile tool in
veterinary medicine, offering numerous benefits for pain
management, injury recovery, and chronic condition management
in animals. Its non-invasive nature and safety profile make
it an attractive option for both veterinarians and pet owners.
As the understanding and application of PEMF
therapy continue to evolve, it is likely to become an increasingly
important component of holistic and integrative veterinary
care.
