Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the
leading cause of disability worldwide, recent study showed
that its disability-adjusted life year is nearly 113 million
globally . Stroke incidence and mortality increases with
age, and for the coming aging population, more stroke cases
are expected . About 20% of stroke patients die, whereas
80% of stroke survivors experience motor impairments contralateral
to the lesioned hemisphere . Typical stroke symptoms include
unilateral motor weakness, limb hemiparesis, spasticity,
gait disturbance, and loss of coordination . More than
half of stroke patients cannot fully recover from motor
impairments, and the quality of their life is substantially
affected .

Ischemic strokes (80% of strokes) result
from a blockage or a reduction of blood flow in an
artery that supplies the brain. They are caused either
by a blood clot (thrombus) which blocks the blood
vessel or by the buildup of plaque (often due to
cholesterol) within the arteries which narrows vessels
resulting in a loss of blood flow. |
Transcranial Electrical Stimulation
(tES) encompasses all methods of non-invasive
current application to the brain used in research and clinical practice.
"Scientists may have
found a way to improve brain connectivity. The findings
may boost short-term working memory, and in the future,

or to the rupture of an aneurysm (arteriovenous malformation)
entailing subarachnoid haemorrhage (5% of strokes). |

Electrical stimulation has been extensively applied
in post-stroke motor restoration, but its treatment mechanisms
are not fully understood. Stimulation of neuromotor control
system at multiple levels manipulates the corresponding
neuronal circuits and results in neuroplasticity changes
of stroke survivors. This rewires the lesioned brain
and advances functional improvement.

a noninvasive therapeutic device that applies pulsed,
alternating microcurrent (<1000 µA) transcutaneously
to the head via electrodes placed on the earlobes,
mastoid processes, zygomatic arches, or the maxillo-occipital
junction. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) granted approval in 1979 for CES for the
treatment of insomnia, depression, and anxiety,
and it is commercially available for personal use.
Controlled studies provide evidence that CES is
effective for anxiety, headaches, fibromyalgia,
smoking cessation, drug withdrawal symptoms, and
(in some but not all studies) pain (see Bianco
1994; Klawansky et al. 1995; Kirsch 1996; DeFelice
1997; Gilula 2007; O’Connell et al. 2010 |
Electrical stimulation protocols have shown
great clinical potential in post-stroke motor recovery.
More precise and effective motor restoration strategies
may further benefit individual stroke subjects. Subsequent
studies should expand the detailed modulatory mechanisms
of the existing modalities and translate the state-of-art
techniques to improve the treatment of stroke survivors
and people with other
movement disorders.

(CES) Therapy is viewed as a gift by many
of those suffering from issues such as
stress, insomnia, anxiety and even strokes. |
One Clinic found CES treatment generally administeredfor
20 minutes to one hour per day, or at least once a week,
but as often as daily in some cases. Most symptoms improved
significant-ly during a customary initial three week
evaluation period, although patients are often provided

You can fight stroke on many fronts. A single thrust
is good; a many-pronged attack is even better. Here are
11 things you can do to stay stroke-free:
Know and control
your blood pressure.
Don't smoke; stop if you do.
Lose weight if needed.
Become more active.
Identify and manage atrial fibrillation.
Be aggressive
about treating a transient ischemic attack (TIA, or mini-stroke).
Treat
circulatory problems like peripheral artery disease,
sickle cell disease, or severe anemia.
Know and control your blood sugar and cholesterol.
If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
Adopt a healthy diet low in sodium and rich in potassium.
Know the warning signs of stroke (see "Stroke
warning signs") and respond immediately.

Professor John Rothwell is a world-renowned
leader in human movement function and non-invasive brain
stimulation techniques for analysing changes in neurological
disease. "Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
uses a strong magnet to send a pulse of magnetic energy
through the skull. Once in the brain, this magnetic energy
induces electrical current which can be used to stimulate
neurons. This stimulation has been shown to improve function
in cognition, movement, and memory in a laboratory setting."

in the Hutton theatre at the Otago Museum:He began his
talk with a demonstration of the magnetic power of his
transcranial magnetic stimulator, sending a piece of
aluminium rocketing toward the ceiling at the press of

piece of blue plastic he held did in fact do something,
he demonstrated how those magnetic waves can affect an
active human brain by turning the wand on himself! With

to his right motor cortex caused twitching in his left
hand, and vice versa.
So, magnetic stimulation can activate the motor cortex.
What can we do with this technology? According to Prof
Rothwell it could be used to speed up learning. In an
experiment conducted with his research team in London
Prof Rothwell tested the average acceleration of a motor
task, a specific kind of thumb tapping, over 10 minutes.
For participants who hadn’t received any TMS the
speed of the tapping was about 1.25x faster after 10
minutes than it was in the beginning. For those participants
who had received TMS before the experiment began, acceleration
was 1.5x faster after 10 minutes.
This small effect has also be observed in treatments
to recover movement after stroke. Patients who received
a combination of TMS and physical therapy were shown
to improve both faster and to a greater extent after
10 days than patients who
had only received the physical therapy."
While Professor Rothwell stressed that this technology
is still in early days, it definitely shows promise in
increasing the effectiveness of current treatments for
