Hydrogen water revisited

Scientific researchers informs us,that Hydrogen is extremely unique since it has the capability to act at the cellular level. Hydrogen is reported to cross the blood brain barrier, to enter the mitochondria, and even the ability to translocate to the nucleus under certain conditions. Once in these ideal cell locations , studies have shown that hydrogen exerts antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties that are beneficial to the cell.

Our body takes in the H2 and convert it into hydrogen anions, H-. or commonly termed as active hydrogen. Active Hydrogen is a powerful anti-oxidant as it is able to remove the active oxygen in our body that is known to be the cause of many types of chronic diseases. My question is: Is hydrogen-rich water true? I am aware of the alkaline water. I have read several articles in the Internet regarding this kind of water but I cannot seem to be convinced


A Hydrogen water is a solution of molecular hydrogen H 2 in water, which shouldn't be confused with acidic or basic solutions. The first scientific reference to hydrogen water appears to be in the journal, Nature Medicine which can be accessed here if you have a personal or institutional subscription to the journal. The claim is that molecular hydrogen can serve as a reducing agent and therefore has antioxidant properties; namely, it can reduce hydroxyl radicals:

Safety of Hydrogen

There is no toxicity to H2 because the byproduct of the free-radical neutralizing reaction is water. Each molecule of H2 will neutralize 2 hydroxyl radicals into two molecules of H2O hydrating your cells in the process.Hydrogen water at a concentration of 1.6 mg/L would have more antioxidant molecules than one hundred 100 mg tablets of vitamin C, as there are more total molecules in 1.6 mg of hydrogen compared 100 mg of vitamin C.

Hydrogen (H2) is reported to have no cytotoxicity even at high concentrations.1 “The safety of H2 for humans is demonstrated by its application in Hydreliox, an exotic, breathing gas mixture of 49% H2, 50% helium and 1% O2, which is used to prevent decompression sickness and nitrogen narcosis during very deep technical diving.”1

Effects of hydrogen have been reported in 63 disease models and human diseases (Table 1). Only two diseases of cerebral infarction and metabolic syndrome have been analyzed in both rodents and humans. Lack of any adverse effects of hydrogen enabled clinical studies even in the absence of animal studies. Some other human studies including Parkinson’s disease are currently in progress, and promising effects of hydrogen are expected to emerge for many other human diseases.

In 2008, a team of Japanese researchers tested 30 subjects who had either type 2 diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance. In a clinical trial performed by Kajiyama et al., the effects of hydrogen rich water on patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance were examined. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study that involved 30 diabetes mellitus patients and 6 impaired glucose patients. Each patient was subjected to 900 ml of hydrogen rich water and 900 ml or pure water for 8 weeks, with a 12-week wash out period. The results revealed that hydrogen rich water increased extra cellular superoxide dismutase and serum adiponectin levels, which is implicated in improving insulin resistance. The results of the study also revealed that hydrogen rich water was able to reduce serum modified LDL levels as well as normalize the glucose tolerance levels in 4 of the 6 total patients. Indicating that hydrogen rich water aids lipid and glucose metabolism. The conclusion made was that hydrogen rich water has benefits in preventing or impeding type 2 diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance, because of its ability to effectively reduce oxidative stress.
