Pulsed
electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy has been used with success
in delayed or nonunion of bone fractures. Its use in the treatment of wound healing
is less established. This review article looks at the use of PEMF and its
effect on wound healing. The mechanism by which PEMF works is not completely
understood, but research has demonstrated its effect on decreasing inflammation
through modulation of the calcium/calmodulin/nitrous oxide pathways, the
stimulation of the production of growth factors, and its effect on angiogenesis. Several
animal studies have demonstrated improved wound healing with the
use of PEMF. This has led to a limited number of double-blind, randomized
controlled studies. These studies demonstrate a trend towards improved
wound healing;

nerve regeneration after injury. In equal groups of animals, two types
of pulsing electromagnetic field treatment were compared with untreated
controls. All animals underwent quantitative electro physiologic and morphologic
assessment at the area of injury. In addition, muscle fibre sizing in the
periphery and retrograde labeling of anterior horn motoneurons with horseradish
peroxidase were studied.Results have shown no statistical differences between
the groups in electro physiologic or morphologic parameters. However, in
animals treated with a pulse-burst electromagnetic field there was a statistically
significant improvement in the labeling and localization of anterior horn
cells in the central nervous system. These results indicate that
pulse-burst electromagnetic fields can increase the numbers of motor neurons
that

In the University of Bari, Italy study, researchers used PEMF on 20 dogs
with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (enlarged prostate) for 3 weeks,
providing treatments twice a day for five minutes each. After 3 weeks, they
reported that prostate gland size decreased by an average of 57 percent!
In addition to the observed efficacy, researchers said their study showed
that PEMF does not negatively impact reproductive aspects such as
libido, semen quality, or testosterone, as traditional forms of therapy for
BPH are
sometimes known to do and required no surgery or drugs. Because of its non-invasive
