Stress wreaks havoc on the mind and body. Until now, it
has not been clear exactly how stress influences disease
and health. Now researchers have found that chronic psychological
stress is associated with the body losing its ability to
regulate the inflammatory response. The research shows for
the first time that the effects of psychological stress on
the body's ability to regulate inflammation can promote the
development and progression of disease

"Did you know that inflammation
is the common link between such debilitating conditions
as Alzheimers, heart disease, cancer, and arthritis?
Did you know inflammation is thought to be the culprit behind the
visible signs of aging? Inflammation is a wellness buzz-word these
days, and for good reason. If
you reduce inflammation in your body, you'll not only look
and feel younger, but you'll significantly lower your risk for
chronic disease!" Source |
Stress wreaks havoc on the mind and body. For
example, psychological stress
is associated with greater risk for depression, heart disease
and infectious diseases. But,
until now, it has not been clear exactly how stress influences
disease and health.
Chronic Inflammation Is Like a Fire
Raging Inside Your Body !!!
When we feel threatened,
our fight or flight response the body’s stress
response kicks in and makes changes in the body.
The heart rate quickens, stress hormones like cortisol
are released, and a host of other changes occur that
allow the body a quick burst of energy to run away
fast or stay and fight — strategies that have
worked for thousands of years, but aren’t always
practical now. While that burst of energy and alertness
can cause you to act, if your body remains in this
state for prolonged periods of time (as in the case
of chronic stress), it can be damaging to your health
in many ways.
|
Chronic inflammation
is when your body no longer has
the ability to turn off the inflammatory response and
it starts damaging healthy tissue in your body.

"Researchers
found that chronic stress changes gene activity of
immune cells before they enter the bloodstream so that
they’re ready to fight infection or trauma — even
when there is no infection or trauma to fight. This
then leads to increased inflammation,reported
the researchers from Ohio State University, the University
of California, Los Angeles, Northwestern University
and the University of British Columbia. " |
A research team
led by Carnegie Mellon University's Sheldon Cohen has
found that chronic psychological stress is associated
with the body losing its ability to regulate the inflammatory
response. Published in the Proceedings
of the National Academy of Sciences, the research shows
for the first time that the effects of psychological
stress on the body's ability to regulate inflammation
can promote the development and progression of disease.

| “There is a stress-induced alteration in
the bone marrow in chronically stressed humans that
selects for a cell that’s going to be pro-inflammatory,” study
researcher John Sheridan, a professor at Ohio State
University and associate director of the university’s
Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research, said in
a statement. “So
what this suggests is that if you’re working
for a really bad boss over a long period of time, that
experience may play out at the level of gene expression
in your immune system.” |
"Inflammation is partly regulated by the
hormone cortisol and when cortisol is not allowed to serve
this function, inflammation can get out of control," said
Cohen, the Robert E. Doherty Professor of Psychology within
CMU's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences." In
short, the theory is that with our ever-stressed, fast-paced
lifestyle, our bodies are pumping out cortisol almost constantly,
which can wreak havoc on our health

Cohen argued that prolonged stress alters the effectiveness
of cortisol to regulate the inflammatory response because
it decreases tissue sensitivity to the hormone. Specifically,
immune cells become insensitive to cortisol's regulatory
effect. In turn, runaway inflammation
is thought to promote the development and progression of
many diseases.
"Weight Gain
and Obesity
"Experts now believe that the problem
for many of us is being in a constant state of
stress. Exposure to cortisol over the long term
can lead to weight gain, as your appetite and insulin
levels are continuously increased. If stress and
cortisol levels stay high, so will insulin levels,
says Robert M. Sapolsky, Ph.D., a professor of
biological sciences and neuroscience at Stanford
University. Continual stress leads to a constant
state of excess cortisol production, which stimulates
glucose production. This excess glucose then typically
is converted into fat, ending up as stored fat.
According to Dr. Sapolsky, "The net effect
of this will be increased fat deposition in a certain
part of the body." Furthermore, according
to the authors of the book The Cortisol Connection,
stress and the resulting chronic overload of cortisol,
make you feel tired and listless. So you overeat
to renew your energy and comfort yourself, with
the end result of accumulated extra inches around
the middle". Source

Cohen, whose groundbreaking early work showed that people
suffering from psychological stress are more susceptible
to developing common colds, used the common cold as the model
for testing his theory. With
the common cold, symptoms are not caused by the virus --
they are instead a "side effect" of the inflammatory
response that is triggered as part of the body's effort to
fight infection. The greater the body's inflammatory
response to the virus, the greater is the likelihood of experiencing
the symptoms of a cold.

In Cohen's first study, after completing an intensive stress
interview, 276 healthy adults were exposed to a virus that
causes the common cold and monitored in quarantine for five
days for signs of infection and illness. Here, Cohen found
that experiencing a prolonged
stressful event was associated with the inability of immune
cells to respond to hormonal signals that normally regulate
inflammation. In turn, those with the inability
to regulate the inflammatory response were more likely to
develop colds when exposed to the virus.
When we are "nice" at the expense of
our health, we set ourselves up to develop disease.
Civilization has it's price. We cannot afford to allow
situations to continually gnaw at our insides in silence. "Every
doctor is familiar with the ""cancer personality"" .... "The
nicest person in the world" say his friends and
relatives, "This should not have happened to him" (Dr.
Kennedy).
|
In the second study, 79 healthy participants
were assessed for their ability to regulate the inflammatory
response and then exposed to a cold virus and monitored for
the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, the chemical
messengers that trigger inflammation. He
found that those who were less able to regulate the inflammatory
response as assessed before being exposed to the virus produced
more of these inflammation-inducing chemical messengers when
they were infected.

"The immune system's ability to regulate inflammation
predicts who will develop a cold, but more importantly it
provides an explanation of how
stress can promote disease," Cohen said. "When
under stress, cells of the immune system are unable to respond
to hormonal control, and consequently, produce levels of
inflammation that promote disease. Because inflammation plays
a role in many diseases such as cardiovascular, asthma and
autoimmune disorders, this model suggests why stress impacts
them as well."
He added, "Knowing this is important for identifying
which diseases may be influenced by stress and for preventing
disease in chronically stressed people."

Remember, it is the immune system that fights cancer and
stress is devastating to our immune system. This may be the
most difficult area of managing our lives in order to get
well. We can be loyal to our Beliefs at the expense of our
health. I have seen it over and over again. Folks just can't
convince themselves that certain drastic changes may be in
order for them to manage their recovery well.
A recent study conducted by researchers at Yale University
compared women who stored fat primarily in their abdomens
with women who stored it mostly in their hips. They found
that the women with belly fat reported feeling more threatened
by stressful tasks and having more stressful lives. They
also produced higher levels of cortisol than the women
with fat on their hips. And that, the authors reasoned,
suggests that cortisol causes fat to be stored in the
center of the body.

A lecturer, when explaining stress
management to an audience, raised a glass of water
and asked,
'How heavy is this glass of water?'
Answers called out ranged from 20g
to 500g.
The lecturer replied, 'The absolute
weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you
try to hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, it's not a problem..
If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If
I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.
In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the
heavier it becomes.'
He continued, 'And that's the way
it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens
all the time, sooner or later, the burden will become
increasingly heavy: and we won't be able to carry
on. '

Cranial electrostimulation
therapy (CES)
CES A Unique Non-drug Therapy
CES is a simple treatment employing mild battery-powered
electronic stimulation through clip-on electrodes that attach
to the earlobes or by pre-gelled electrodes placed behind
the ears. Current flow is limited so that the most a user
will experience during the process is a brief tingling sensation.
Its most immediate impact is reduction of anxiety. For most
people, anxiety reduction is experienced in the course of
treatment, but it also may be first seen hours, or as late
as several days after. After a CES session you are left feeling
both alert and relaxed . Psychologists call this an "alpha
state". The effect differs from pharmaceutical treatments
in that people report feeling that their bodies are lighter
and more relaxed and their mind more alert and clear. The
results are cumulative and lasting.
"There’s no escaping
it: stress is a part of our lives. How we handle
that stress can have an impact on our health. Every
day, we hear more and more about the harm it may
cause our minds and bodies,- from heart disease to
anxiety attacks. Now researchers are trying to determine
if stress is also a factor in who will develop cancer."
Hundreds of studies have measured
how stress impacts our immune systems and fights
disease. At Ohio State University, researcher Dr.
Ron Glaser, Ph.D., found that students under pressure
had slower-healing wounds and took longer to produce
immune system cells that kill invading organisms.
Renowned researcher Dr. Dean Ornish, M.D., who
has spent 20 years examining the effects of stress
on the body, found that stress-reduction techniques
could actually help reverse heart disease. And
Dr. Barry Spiegel, M.D., a leader in the field
of psychosomatic medicine, found that metastatic
breast cancer patients lived longer when they participated
in support groups.
Other studies have gone as far
as to show those women who experienced traumatic
life events or losses in previous years had significantly
higher rates of breast cancer. Source |
CES is the doorway to good
health.
82%
of participants in one
study suffering from an anxiety/Stress reported
a significant improvement in their symptoms after
treatment with CES.
- Kirsch D, Gilula MF, Electromedicine: CES in the Treatment of
Anxiety Disorders, Practical Pain Management, March 2007, pp 40-47. |
It works as an important adjunct in programs invoking nutrients,
hormones, and medications. Its multiplicity of health benefits
include: induction of relaxation response; exertion of control
over frontal lobe behavior and modulating hormone levels...When
amino acid supplementation is coupled with CES therapy, this
combination is not only a potentially potent therapeutic
regimen for stress but anti-aging as well

The Use of Magnetic Field
for the Reduction of Inflammation:

Electromagnetic fields are the basis of all
life. The earth possesses a magnetic field which is the prerequisite
for the survival of all life forms. The human body, like
every other organism, functions by way of a finely co-ordinated
network of electromagnetic fields and forces. These regulate
most bodily functions and keep them in their natural equilibrium.
"Normal cells are not usually impacted
by magnetic fields. Compromised cells, called meta-stable
cells, are more likely to be impacted. This means that PEMFs
have more impact in circumstances where there is imbalance
in tissues or cells, ie, where there is pathology or chronic
inflammation."
Increased Oxygen Supply
- In aerobic cell respiration (increased stamina in athletic performance)
- In anaerobic cell respiration (more rapid regeneration as a result
of expulsion of lactates and faster incorporation of glycogens into muscle
cells)
- General increase in metabolism owing to increase in combustion processes
within the cells (mitochondria)

Improved Circulation
- Circulatory problems: in vascular disease caused by diabetes and sclerosis
(arteriosclerosis), in varicose veins with ulcers
- Accelerated absorption of bruises (haematomas)
- Expulsion of lymph oedema
Reduction of inflammation by PEMFs
Significant changes occur in other white blood cells called
lymphocytes, from both low intensity, low-frequency PEMF’s
and even DC/permanent magnetic fields. PEMFs interact with
cellular systems in often unexpected ways. This means that
increasing frequency and or intensity does not always produce
a one-to-one change in reaction intensity.
PEMF’s inhibit growth and the natural death of unwanted
lymphocytes that decreases inflammation. The EMF inhibition
of lymphocytes and then inflammatory processes appears to
be most obvious 48 and 72 hours after EMF treatment and then
the EMF effect seems to disappear. This indicates that the
effects of PEMFs can work well with other natural treatments.
"PEMF therapy targets cells that are meta-stable as
a consequence of disease or other ongoing therapies. Thus,
PEMF’s can be an important cellular therapy in many
diseases, including cancer, psoriasis, wound healing, and
bacterial infections because of their effects on reducing
chronic inflammation. It is important that normal
homeostatically stable cells are not harmed by PEMF’s,
allowing other treatments to be more effective without proportional
increases in side effects. In chronic inflammatory diseases,
cells are characteristically maintained in meta-stable states,
as a consequence of cytokine secretions and other stressors
associated with the disease. In these cases, PEMF’s
can work as a stand-alone anti-inflammatory therapy.
Even weak, low-frequency PEMF’s induce apoptosis in
activated T cells, thereby reducing chronic inflammation
without negatively affecting normal body process"
Oxidative Stress
Oxidative Stress And Inflammation Age Humans
The Fastest
Like an apple turns brown when exposed to
air, our cells can “rust” when we breathe due
to oxidative stress, a process caused by free radicals. Free
radicals are unstable molecules that damage or “oxidize” cells
throughout the body in a process called oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress reflects an imbalance between
the systemic manifestation of reactive oxygen species and
a biological system's ability to readily detoxify the reactive
intermediates or to repair the resulting damage.
Overproduction of free radicals can cause oxidative
damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA), eventually
leading to many chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis,
cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion
injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic
inflammation, stroke ..

"When people
hear the term neurodegenerative disease, they either run
the other way and just pray that they never have to deal
with it, or they have no idea what it means. When millions
of Americans take prescription drugs to cover up and temporarily
minimize symptoms of chronic health ailments, they are actually
increasing oxidative stress and inflammation, pouring “salt
in the wound.” Finally, when people consume chemicals
in foods and drinks, and use chemical-laden personal care
products, they are fueling the degeneration of their DNA,
and when that incapacitates the brain, they can’t even
identify their immediate family. It’s called Alzheimer’s
disease, and it’s not just for “old timers” anymore."
"Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the
production of free radicals and the ability of the body to
counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization
by antioxidants.

Free radicals can chemically interact with cell components
such as DNA, protein or lipid and steal their electrons in
order to become stabilized. This, in turn, destabilizes the
cell component molecules which then seek and steal an electron
from another molecule, therefore triggering a large chain
of free radical reactions.
Every cell that utilizes enzymes and oxygen to perform functions
is exposed to oxygen free radical reactions that have the
potential to cause serious damage to the cell. Antioxidants
are molecules present in cells that prevent these reactions
by donating an electron to the free radicals without becoming
destabilized themselves. An imbalance between oxidants and
antioxidants is the underlying basis of oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress leads to many pathophysiological conditions
in the body. Some of these include neurodegenerative diseases
such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, gene
mutations and cancers, chronic fatigue syndrome, fragile
X syndrome, heart and blood vessel disorders, atherosclerosis,
heart failure, heart attack and inflammatory diseases." By
