The Ultimate Acupuncture Laser Tool

Product Name: Pain Relief Cold Laser Therapy Hand Held Unit

Always wanted to try acupuncture but are hesitant because of "needles"? Try laser acupuncture! A relatively new method , laser acupuncture usually uses low-energy laser beams — instead of traditional acupuncture needles — to influence the flow of current at the acupuncture points. Beyond conventional medicine, this procedure is usually the preferred procedure for effective treatment of painful conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, arthritis, and chronic headaches. .

LASER, an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation,

Its interesting that the main reason people visit healthcare providers is because of pain. Pain affects about 100 million adults IN the USA alone—more than the total affected by heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined.

Perhaps the greatest advantage of laser acupuncture is that it's completely painless. This is a great way for those of us with needle phobia:)

A laser acupuncturist typically aims a beam of light from a laser tube onto an acupuncture point, stimulating it similar to the way acupuncture needles do. Because you are not breaking the skin—there is zero risk of infection.

Laser acupuncture is also effective and often shown to be as effective as needle acupuncture for a variety of problems. Effectiveness is enhanced because laser acupuncture allows you to treat points you otherwise might not be able to treat, due to patient age, sensitivity, or fear.

During the procedure, a practitioner may hold the beam steadily for a period that can range from ten seconds to a maximum of 10 minutes. The duration of the beam usually depends on the amount of tissue the laser must penetrate, and the power neededto apply on a point.

"Facial Rejuvenation Laser Acupuncture is becoming a more popular, non-surgical method for those who want not only to maintain beauty, radiance and vitality in the face, but also improve their overall health and well being."

Smoothing Out the Lines

Martha Lucas, PhD, LAc, a Colorado acupuncturist, says after a series of 10 treatments (twice a week for five weeks), skin becomes more delicate and fair, and there are fewer wrinkles. She says the treatments also result in an erasing of fine lines and a reduction of deeper lines, less sagginess, a lifting of droopy eyelids, and a clearing or reduction of age spots. And, as an added bonus, she says, there is an overall rejuvenation that is not confined to your face.

"Cosmetic acupuncture is a good alternative for women who don't want the side effects associated with a surgical facelift," Lucas says."

There are several advantages to using the lasers over needles:

Biologically, the laser stimulation will increase the cell production in connective, tendonous, and cartilaginous tissue. This results in increased collagen production. Research demonstrates that the laser affects the mitochondria thereby enhancing the production and synthesis of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) and optimizes oxygenation and phagocytes.

The healing process increases the tensile strength of healed tissue, reduces swelling, increases blood flow, increases lymphatic activity, reduces inflammation and increases cellular metabolism and speeds the repair process. The results are accumulative.

Distinct Effects
1.Growth factor response within cells and tissues.
2.Pain relief as a result of increased endorphin and serotonin release.
3.Increased lymphatic activity and strengthening of the immune system response.
4.Stimulation of acupuncture points, increased collagen and ATP production, increased circulation. Treatment is non-destructive

.

"How do they work? In contrast to needle acupuncture, in which input begins with the microtraumatic mechanical effe
cts of the needle on local tissue, laser acupuncture relies on the absorption and scattering of light within tissue. Photons from the laser create a stimulat ing, biomodulatory effect. Physiologic changes include: increased phagocytosis, vasodilation, increased rate of regeneration of lymphatic and blood vessels, stimulation of enzyme activity at the wound edges, fibroblast stimulation, kera tinocyte and fibrocyte proliferation, scar and keloid reduction, increased ATP and DNA synthes is, and stimulation of muscle, tendon, and nerve regeneration. Laser acupuncture also activates specific regions of the brain as shown with functional magnetic resonance imaging. Acupuncture studies using functional brain imaging help elucidate effects and pathways linking peripheral stimulation, cortical brain changes and empirically-validated effects on internal organs."source

The earliest experimental application of low power laser in medicine was first reported in 1968 by Endre Mester in Hungary. He described the use of Ruby and Argon lasers in the promotion of healing of chronic ulcers. In 1974, Heinrich Plogg of Fort Coulombe, Canada, presented his work on the use of "needleless acupuncture" and pain attenuation. The first clinical applications of the GaAlAs diode laser appeared in the literature in 1981.

" Among the most convincing studies are those that employ functional magnetic resonance imagine (“fMRI”) to identify and quantify actual changes in brain activity in response to stimuli. To determine if the effects of cold laser stimulation on acupuncture points are detected and processed by the brain (real effect) or not detected by the brain (placebo response), investigators have conducted double-blinded randomized studies using fMRI to examine the brain activity differences in which inactive (fake/placebo lasers) and active lasers are tested on the same acupuncture point". Brian D. Lawenda, M.D.

"Critics pointed out the problems to understand and accept laser acupuncture. All wavelengths seemed to work and any power density and energy too. And when needling is used, it is important to pinpoint a very small acupuncture point and get the ”qi” reaction. When a laser is used, a very large area is illuminated and there is no qi. The problem is very obvious in auricular acupuncture. Using an infrared laser on 3-4 points in the ear means that the entire ear has been illuminated! It just does not make sense. Still, studies using fMRI [1,2]

showed that the reactions in the brain were similar when using a needle and a laser. So obviously it workes,"

from Laser Acupuncture – Fact or Fiction?

"In 1991, a study was done in Novosibirsk, Russia that applied directly to the study of acupuncture. Researchers shined light on various parts of the body and found that light traveled under the skin to other acupuncture points, but it didn't travel to places that were not on acupuncture meridians. It appears that the body contains a sort of fiber optic network—where light enters an acupuncture point, travels through the meridian and can be detected at other places along the meridian with a sensitive photon detector. This is a fascinating study showing how light is actually received, used and transmitted throughout the body.

Recent studies on laser acupuncture have included advanced brain imaging, as well as several other modern protocols for measuring various physiological effects to the body. These studies show that laser acupuncture has physiological effects, not only locally, but also in the brain, similar to needle acupuncture. Laser on Urinary Bladder 67, for example, shows measurable effects in the brain. The effects were only detected when the laser was turned on. When the laser was turned off, no effects were detected."

"Acupuncture is effective treatment for various psychoemotional and physical symptoms experienced by oncology patients (ie, pain, dry mouth, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, fatigue, anxiety). "

Obviously, as more studies are performed, more information will be found. "

Wavelength: This refers to the color of the laser and is measured in nanometers (nm). At the high end of the color spectrum, we find violet and ultraviolet in the 400 nm range. At the low end of the spectrum, we find infrared light at 700 nm and above. Common acupuncture wavelengths are red, in the 635-650 nm range.

635-650 nM (Red) -The most common.

The same wavelength produced inside the cells of the body, so it is biologically compatible with the body.
Stimulatory effect: increases ATP production in the cell.
TONIFYING effect on an acupuncture point.

Laser Therapy use is now widespread in almost every medical speciality, especially dermatology, ophthalmology and medical acupuncture.

Japan and several Scandinavian countries are at the forefront of clinical research work with laser.Laser Therapy is also used in Australia, Canada, France, Korea, People's Republic of China, U.K. and many other countries. A tissue repair research unit, examining the effects of laser, now exists at Guy's Hospital, London. Many centres of research are now developing around the world.

It is to be noted that lasers machines are used widely by Home users, physiotherapists, veterinary surgeons as well as practitioners of alternate therapies.

The light from a laser can be applied directly to superficial wounds such as:

Acne
Skin rashes
Cold sores
Canker sores
Insect bites
Cuts and scratches
Bruises
Eczema
Scars
Sunburn
Poison Ivy

In some musculo-skeletal conditions higher doses of laser may be used for the deactivation of trigger points. Trigger points may be found in muscles, ligaments, tendons and periosteum. Direct irradiation over tendons, joint margins, bursae etc may be effective in the treatment of conditions in which trigger points may play a part. Children and the elderly may require smaller doses. Areas of thick skin or muscle may require higher doses for penetration than finer skin areas e.g. ear.

"Bio-stimulatory effects of laser are governed by the Arndt-Schultz Law of Biology i.e. weak stimuli excite physiological activity, strong stimuli retard it. The implication of this for wound healing is that, as treatment of a wound is continuing and there appears to be a slowing down of healing, a reduction of the laser dosage may be needed. By virtue of the Arndt-Schultz Law and the changed responsiveness of the tissues, what was originally a stimulating laser dose may have become an inhibitory dose of laser. "

How long are each treatments? Typically, treatments take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. Each acupuncture laser will come with instructions on how long the treatments should take per point.
