Schumann Resonance
Just as a tuning fork has natural frequencies
for sound,
the planet Earth has natural frequencies,
called Schumann resonance's.
Schumann resonance is due to the space between the surface
of the Earth and the conductive ionosphere acting as a wave guide. The
limited dimensions of the Earth cause this wave guide to act as a resonant
cavity for electromagnetic waves in the ELF band. The cavity is naturally
excited by energy from lightning strikes. The lowest-frequency (and highest-intensity)
mode of the Schumann resonance is at a frequency of approximately 7.83
Hz.
The Schumann Resonance's are quasi-standing electromagnetic
waves that exist in the Earth's 'electromagnetic' cavity (the space between
the surface of the Earth and the Ionosphere). Like waves on a string,
they are not present all the time, but have to be 'excited' to be observed.
They are not caused by anything internal to the Earth, its crust or its
core. They seem to be related to electrical activity in the atmosphere,
particularly during times of intense lightning activity. They occur at
several frequencies, specifically 7.83 (strongest), 14, 20, 26, 33, 39
and 45 (weakest) Hertz, with a daily variation of about ± 0.5
Hertz. So long as the properties of Earth's electromagnetic cavity remains
about the same, these frequencies remain the same. Presumably there is
some change due to the solar sunspot cycle as the Earth's ionosphere
changes in response to the 11-year cycle of solar activity. The resonant
properties of this terrestrial cavity were first predicted by the German
physicist W. O. Schumann between 1952 and 1957, and first detected in
1954.
A
Tuning Fork for Life
Although the existence of the Schumann Resonance is an established scientific
fact, there are very few scientists who are aware of the importance of
this frequency as a tuning fork for Life. Its proposed that it is not
merely a phenomenon caused by lightning in the atmosphere, but a very
important electromagnetic standing wave, acting as background frequency
and influencing biological oscillators within the mammalian brain.
At the time when Schumann published his research results
in the journal `Technische Physik', Dr Ankermueller, a physician, immediately
made the connection between the Schumann resonance and the alpha rhythm
of brainwaves. He found the thought of the earth having the same natural
resonance as the brain very exciting and contacted Professor Schumann,
who in turn asked a doctorate candidate to look into this phenomenon.
This candidate was Herbert König who became Schumann's successor
at Munich University. König demonstrated a correlation between Schumann
Resonance's and brain rhythms. He compared human EEG recordings with
natural electromagnetic fields of the environment (1979) and found that
the main
frequency produced by Schumann oscillations is very close to the frequency
of alpha rhythms.

Natural electromagnetic processes in the environment (I-IV),
human EEG readings in comparison. Schumann oscillations (I) and the EEG
a-rhythm, as well as locally conditioned fluctuations of the electric
field (II) and the EEG d-rhythm, show a noticeable similarity in their
temporal variation. From König, 1979.
Dr König carried out further measurements of Schumann
resonance and eventually arrived at a frequency of exactly 7.83 Hz, which
is even more interesting, as this frequency is one which applies to mammals.
For instance, septal driving of the hippocampal rhythm in rats has been
found to have a minimum threshold at 7.7 Hz (Gray, 1982).
This relationship has been explored by a number of investigators.
One of the foremost researchers in this field is Dr Wolfgang Ludwig,
who has been investigating Schumann Resonance and its place in nature
for many years
YIN and YANG
During his research Dr Ludwig came across the ancient Chinese teachings
which state that Man needs two environmental signals: the YANG (masculine)
signal from above and the YIN (feminine) signal from below. This description
fits the relatively strong signal of the Schumann wave surrounding
our planet being YANG and the weaker geomagnetic waves coming from
below, from within the planet, being the YIN signal
The Chinese teachings state that to achieve perfect health, both signals
must be in balance. Dr Ludwig found that this is indeed the case. He
writes in his book `Informative Medizin' that research carried out by
E.Jacobi at the University of Duesseldorf showed that the one sided use
of Schumann (YANG) wave simulation without the geomagnetic (YIN) signal
caused serious health problems. On the other hand, the absence of Schumann
waves creates a similar situation. Professor R.Wever from the Max Planck
Institute for Behavioral Physiology in Erling-Andechs, built an underground
bunker which completely screened out magnetic fields. Student volunteers
lived there for four weeks in this hermetically sealed environment. Professor
Wever noted that the student's circadian rhythms diverged and that they
suffered emotional distress and migraine headaches. As they were young
and healthy, no serious health conditions arose, which would not have
been the case with older people or people with a compromised immune system.
After only a brief exposure to 7.8 Hz (the very frequency which had been
screened out), the volunteers health stabilized again.
The same complaints were reported by the first astronauts
and cosmonauts, who, out in space, also were no longer exposed to the
Schumann waves. Now modern spacecrafts are said to contain a
device which simulates the Schumann waves.
All
the aforesaid points to the fact that the ancient teachings are correct.
Mankind depends on two subtle environmental signals, the Yin from below
and the Yang from above.
Schumann's resonance
has recently been rising in value
Some research has suggested that the frequency of the basic Schumann's
resonance has recently been rising in value, possibly threatening the
whole biosphere, human welfare and our evolutionary future. All biological
processes are a function of electromagnetic field interactions. EM fields
are the connecting link between the world of form and resonant patterns.
They store gestalts or patterns of information. The bridge connecting
solar system resonance's and brain frequencies resides in our human DNA
helix, which co-evolved in the Earth's environment.
Electrical engineer Lewis B. Hainsworth, MA, was among
the first to suggest that human health is linked with geophysical parameters
by way of the naturally occurring Schumann's ELF. His hypothesis identified
naturally occurring features which determine the frequency spectrum of
human brain-wave rhythms:
The frequencies of naturally occurring electromagnetic signals, circulating
in the electrically resonant cavity bounded by the Earth and the ionosphere,
have governed or determined the 'evolution' or development of the frequencies
of operation of the principal human brain-wave signals. In particular,
the alpha rhythm is so placed that it can in no circumstances suffer
an extensive interference from naturally occurring signals.
Hainsworth concluded that the frequencies of human brain-waves
evolved in response to these signals. If his hypothesis is correct, conditions
for evolutionary changes in human brain-wave patterns have now been established.
Furthermore, variations in these patterns can produce mild to disastrous
health and behavioral changes.
In 1957, German physicist Dr W. O. Schumann calculated
the Earth/ionosphere cavity resonance frequencies (which were named after
him). He fixed the most predominant standing wave at about 7.83 Hz.
A "tuned system" consists of at least two
oscillators of identical resonant frequencies. If one oscillator starts
emitting, the other will be activated by the signal very shortly, in
the process of resonance, entrainment or kindling (igniting the resonance
phenomenon among the neurons). It becomes obvious that in deep meditation,
when waves of alpha and theta rhythms cascade across the entire brain,
a resonance is possible between the human being and the planet. Energy
and information which are embedded in a field are transferred. Perhaps
the planet communicates with us in this primal language of frequencies.
As human beings we have extraordinary potentials we
have hardly begun to study, much less understand. Creative gifts, intuitions
and talents that are unpredictable or emergent may become stabilized
in generations to come. Hopefully, we can learn to understand both our
emergence from an essentially electromagnetic environment and facilitate
our potential for healing, growth and non-local communication.
Although Schumann Resonance could easily be confirmed
by measurements at the time of its discovery, it is no longer so obvious
due to our atmosphere being filled with manmade radiation noise at different
frequencies. This is almost drowning out the natural signals - signals
that have been there through eons of evolution. It is possible that
these signals act like a natural tuning fork, not just for the biological
oscillators of the brain, but for all processes of life.
With the advent of new wireless technology, in particular microwaves
pulsed at frequencies close to Schumann Resonance as in mobile telephony,
another threat is emerging. We may be creating an environment that is
literally `out of tune' with Nature itself. And it is at this point that
there is an urgent need for us to understand how everything alive responds
to the most subtle changes in magnetic and electromagnetic fields surrounding
us.
Optimum Biological Frequency Resonance (OBFR)
Achieving an `OBFR' is the foundation for good health. Research in Biophysics
seems to suggest, that our biological system is "tuned into" the
background frequency of our planet - the `Schumann Resonance'- a steady
pulse of 7.83 Hz which beats around the planet within the earth/ionosphere
cavity. It has been found that this is also the dominant brainwave
rhythm of all mammals. Drowning out this natural frequency by overlaying
it with manmade radiation noise, can have devastating effects on our
immune system.
Depending on your point of view, living beings either
evolved in this natural electromagnetic environment or were created with
Divine Intelligence to live in harmony with it. One thing is certain:
Since life began, the Earth has been surrounding all living things with
this natural frequency pulsation. Many experts believe that the wide
spectrum of artificial man-made EMF radiation masks the natural beneficial
frequency of the Earth. Electro pollution may cause us to feel more stressed,
fatigued and "out of balance." Laboratory research has shown
that exposing living cells to the Schumann Resonance had the effect of "protecting" them
from ambient EMF's, allowing the cells to increase their immune protection,
and decrease the absorption of depression-inducing chemicals. Some researchers
believe that by producing a 7.83 Hz pulse with a field generator (Schumann
device), we can counter the effects of the irritating man-made fields.
By replicating the Earth's natural rhythm, we may be providing ourselves
(at least in our immediate vicinity) with a more healthy environment
