Dr. Oz from Oprah's show says that 90% of Americans have parasites.

Many people believe that parasites only happen to someone else and that they do not have them. But it has been estimated that more than 50% of all people in the Western world will have some sort of parasitic or semi-parasitic animal living in their bodies. It is also thought that parasites could be a co-factor in almost every illness that we now suffer from. So is having a thorough parasite cleanse actually healthy for us and our bodies?

Dr. Hulda Clark, in her book, The Cure For All Cancers and Cure For All Diseases claims that most cancers are caused by the "fasciolopsis buski" parasite and that every one of her cancer patients had human parasites.

There are two general groups of parasites. One consists of worms such as tape worms and roundworms. The second category is the protozoa, one-celled organisms. Parasites infect the intestines of both humans and animals and can cause a great deal of intestinal distress. We often associate parasites with Third World countries and poor sanitation, but parasites are a problem everywhere, even in North America. In countries where sanitation is a priority people mistakenly assume that no problem exists and they don't need to worry. Parasites are everywhere, waiting for the opportunity to latch onto an unsuspecting host. Backpackers have long been aware of the danger of drinking water from streams and lakes. Open water even in the backcountry is often contaminated with parasites waiting for a host.

Some of the most serious parasitic infections are those involving the blood vascular and lymphatic system. These are the human heart parasites and parasites in the blood. Both protozoan and nematode parasites that need a blood sucking or biting arthropod intermediate host are included. There is also a group of very specialized trematodes that are blood parasites that live in the veins.

Nematodes like Trichinella spiralis, an intestinal parasite of carnivores like wolves, foxes, dogs and bears infects people. Its larval stages occur in the muscles of a wide variety of mammals including pigs, rats and man. Preferred locations are the diaphragm, heart, jaws and striated muscle generally.

Heart failure is a disorder in which the heart pumps blood inadequately, leading to reduced blood flow, back-up (congestion) of blood in the veins and lungs, and other changes that may further weaken the heart

Heart failure may result from other disorders that cause the heart's walls to stiffen, such as infiltrations and infections. For example, in amyloidosis, amyloid, an unusual protein not normally present in the body, infiltrates many tissues in the body. Parasitic infections produce a wide spectrum of cardiac manifestations. They may involve various anatomic structures of the heart and are manifested clinically as myocarditis, cardiomyopathies, pericarditis, or pulmonary hypertension in many resource-constrained settings. However, many parasitic infections involving the heart may also be currently diagnosed in developed countries due to growing worldwide travel, blood transfusions, and increasing numbers of immunosuppression states such as organ transplantation, use of immunosuppressive agents, or HIV/AIDS. Clinicians anywhere in the globe need to be aware of the potential cardiac manifestations of parasitic diseases. Here is part one of a three-part series discussing parasites of the heart.

The story began when the patient (who is now the "victim" of surgeons) began feeling pain in some regions near his heart.

He also had an edema on his lower limbs, headaches and hard breathing.
Through ultrasound doctors were able to detect a growing tumor on heart. Thus the decision to make a surgery on heart was made.

As you can see, the tumor located on the patient's heart turned out to be a settlement of tapeworms, the appearance of which, however, did not surprise the doctors. This is because, unfortunately, such a thing is met quite often today.

Chagas disease

Chagas disease is common in Mexico and South America. It is thought that Charles Darwin suffered from chronic Chagus disease following his trip to South America. It is caused by T. cruzi, and is characterized by an acute phase in which several symptoms occur: anemia, loss of strength, nervous disorders, chills, muscle and bone pain, and varying degrees of heart failure. Death may occur 3-4 weeks after infection.

A chronic form of Chagas disease is seen usually in adults. The chronic form is characterized by dysfunctions in the central and peripheral nervous system. Many patients die of heart failure due to an enlargement of the heart and subsequent lack of cardiac muscle tone. Others suffer heart damage because the parasite damages the nervous supply to the heart. The heart muscle then atrophies (the muscle shrinks). The atrophy leads to congestive heart failure, because the muscle cannot pump blood efficiently. The intestine may also become immobile and enlarged due to the degradation of the nervous supply to that organ.

The California case led Dr. Peter R. Kerndt of the Los Angeles County Health Department and others to survey 1,000 blood donors at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Hospital. The blood bank at the hospital recruits about 5,000 donors each year, 40 percent of whom have lived in Mexico, Central America or South America.

Dr. Kerndt's team found only a small number of donors infected with the parasite, but concluded that ''there is a small but significant risk of transfusion-related Chagas' disease at blood donor centers in the United States.'' The blood samples were subjected to various laboratory tests and the results varied; the doctors said that from 1 to 11 of the 1,000 donors were infected.

Dr. Ira Shulman, who heads the hospital's blood bank, said he believes blood donations should be screened in cities where there are large populations of Latin Americans. But Dr. Shulman said such tests will not be done at his hospital until a commercial test is made available.

In a separate study in Washington, Dr. Kirchhoff found evidence of infection in 5 percent of 205 Salvadoran and Nicaraguan immigrants.

In South and Central America, many blood banks use a chemical called gentian violet to kill the parasite in donated blood before it is transfused.

But the prevention is not popular because the blood is discolored purple and can give a recipient a purplish hue for a few days.

The prospects are bleak for victims of severe Chagas' disease. The two drugs used to treat Chagas' disease, nifurtimox and Benznidazole, are toxic and seldom achieve cures.

Heart transplants generally are not done for Chagas' disease victims because the parasite usually destroys the new heart, said Dr. Norman Shumway, the heart transplant pioneer at Stanford University.

Human disease caused by dog heartworm.
