"Out of body" experiences (OBEs) are personal experiences during which people feel as if they are perceiving the physical world from a location outside of their physical bodies. At least 5 and perhaps as many as 35 of every 100 people have had an OBE at least once in their lives (Blackmore, 1982). OBEs are highly arousing; they can be either deeply disturbing or profoundly moving. Understanding the nature of this widespread and potent experience would no doubt help us better understand the experience of being alive and human. The simplest explanation is that OBEs are exactly what they seem: the
human consciousness separating from the human body and traveling in a discorporate
form in the physical world. Another
idea is that they are hallucinations, but this requires an explanation of why
so many people have the same delusion. Some of our experiments have led us
to consider the OBE as a natural phenomenon arising out of normal brain processes.
Thus, we believe that the OBE is a mental event that happens to healthy
people. In support of this, psychologists Gabbard and Twemlow (1984) have concluded
from surveys and psychological tests that the typical OBE experient is "a
close approximation of the
'average healthy American.'" (p. 40) Out-of-Body Terms
Much of the discussion of out-of-body experiences has centered around the recounting of experiences and speculation on the nature of those experiences. Some articles have questioned whether the experiences are of an hallucinatory nature or purely a function of biochemical processes that occur in the brain, and, at the other extreme, some have linked them with notions of the existence of an immortal soul and other ideas generally associated with religious interpretations of human existence. Most readers are intrigued by the thought of being able to have and control OBEs, and see them as a potentially interesting experience, though some smaller number of people taking part in discussions are interested in trying to figure out their nature and function and their possible implications for the understanding of what it means to be fully human |
The Gateway Affirmation A dissertation study was conducted to: (1) examine the qualitative nature of reported peak and peak-like experiences during the GATEWAY program as recounted by participants; and (2) to study selected characteristics that may differentiate participants who have these experiences from those who do not. Based on data collected from eleven groups, it appears that peak-experiences occur with regularity during the Gateway Program, as well as a wide range and multidimensionality of other trans-ordinary experiences. This great variety and depth of experiences suggest that Gateway helps to facilitate a huge opening or expansion of consciousness. This expansion seems to occur in both the outer and inner dimensions of being. Interestingly, the types, intensity, and richness of patterns of experience reported bear a striking resemblance to those reported by psychedelic (LSD) researchers (Grof, 1976; Masters & Houston, 1966; Pahnke & Richards, 1972). A useful metaphor to conceptualize the types of experience reported is that of turning up the volume on life . One becomes more physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually awake. To the extent individuals are willing to acknowledge and consciously integrate such profound experiences, their lives may radically change in positive, growthful directions. FOR CENTURIES, PEOPLE WHO DESCRIBED floating out of their bodies were dismissed as being out of their minds. A recent case study offers insight into this phenomenon, in the first clinical description of an out-of-body experience that was induced in a controlled setting. Scientists: Misfiring brain behind bizarre sensation (CNN) -- Over the years, many people have described having "out-of-body" experiences, but there's not much solid scientific data on what causes them. Now, a chance event may shed some light on what produces the feeling. Neurology researchers in Switzerland report the case of a woman who described "floating above her own body and watching herself" while she was undergoing testing and treatment for epilepsy. The strange experience only occurred when one particular part of her brain, the angular gyrus in the right cortex, was stimulated with an electrode. And it happened every time the angular gyrus was stimulated. "Of course it was a big surprise when she told us," said Dr. Olaf Blanke, a neurologist at Geneva University Hospital, and author of the findings in this week's edition of the British journal Nature.
"You hear strange reports sometimes, but in five or six years of doing this I've never gotten that sort of response before," said Blanke. He says the patient wasn't really frightened, but she did say it was a very strange sensation. Blanke said it would have been difficult for the patient to fake such an experience. She had up to 100 electrodes implanted in her brain for these sessions, and had no idea which electrode would be stimulated, or when. The stimulations each took 2 seconds or less. At other times during the same session, Blanke said, the patient screamed, because she "saw" her legs shortening, and "saw" her knees about to hit her face. Electrodes and brain 'mapping' While the electrodes are implanted under full anesthesia, patients are fully awake during the testing procedure, so their comfort, language skills, and responses can be constantly monitored. Lots of people try to explain something away which is for many people,
an amazing experience that has transformed their lives. I hope we can
add some precise neuroscience and try to collaborate with people in many
fields. This interpretation of Dr. Blanke's observation of out of body experience is based on newer easily obtainable technology which offers different conclutions, his work constitutes a substantial step forward in our ability to understand out of body experiences and eventually, to induce them. Now that out of body experiences are entering the domain of real science, a simple question emerges. Will it be possible to develop technology your procedures that will induce out of body experiences on demand? The answer is yes. Dr. Barry Gordon comments on Dr. Olaf Blanke findings This case is a little unusual for researchers, since the out-of-body experience was a surprise to both the patient and the doctors. Since nothing was planned, as it would have been in standard research, there were no control groups or other measures, like perhaps videotaping the session. Others in the field say these serendipitous findings sound plausible, and intriguing for further study. "It does fit in with a body of work on how we perceive our bodies and space," said Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.

He says similar descriptions have come from other people with epilepsy, and from stroke victims and others who have had seizures. This region of the brain may also tie in to the well-documented descriptions of "phantom limbs" by amputees. "Our brains are not built the way we think; the inner mind is more bizarrely constructed than we might think," said Gordon. As an example, Gordon said, when you look at an apple, you might see red and round and shiny and think of the word, "apple." But the brain may see the red in one place, the round and shiny in another, and process the word "apple" in yet another. We count on our brains to sort it all out and combine it into something we understand, he said.
Out-of-body experiences: from Penfield
to present. Can the brain, when stimulated, yield entirely novel experiences? Blanke et al. (2002) describe a patient who reported spontaneous out-of-body experiences during electrical stimulation of her angular gyrus. These findings, although apparently extraordinary, agree with much earlier reports from a patient tested by Wilder Penfield. Such studies can provide clues about the nature of conscious experience. Studies, which has published several accounts of veridical of body experiences.
These are cases in which a person has an out of body experience, sees
something that would not be visible from their body's location, and then
later has their perception validated. In one case, an elderly woman in
intensive care had a heart attack followed by a near-death experience
which included an out of body experience. During her out of body experience
she saw the roof of the hospital and noticed a red tennis shoe. A maintenance
worker and some medical observers went to the roof of the hospital where
they retrieved the shoe. While this seems to prove consciousness can
exist separate from the brain, it leaves open one possibility. It may
be that the mind, when it is outside of the body has a structure, and
that structure reflects the structure of the brain. Proving the existence
of consciousness outside the body, or separate from the brain may prove
to be very elusive, even if the ideas that support it are valid. Do OBEs happen ONLY in the brain? No. There have been cases where people have had OBEs, and seen things from an out-of-body perspective that they could not have seen from their body's location. This writer holds that the brain is involved in triggering OBEs, but once they're happening, other mechanisms predominate. A nurse at Hartford Hospital states that she worked with a patient described an NDE in which she saw a red shoe on the roof of the hospital during her OBE, which a janitor then retrieved. Kenneth Ring describes three such cases involving shoes, shoelaces and a yellow smock and also tells a story from a Seattle social worker who also retrieved a shoe outside a window ledge that was identified by a patient during an NDE. It is possible to study the OBE either by enrolling in a course or by
reading some of the literature on the subject. It is also important to
understand the bioenergetic processes involved in the OBE, which allow
a greater control of the projective experience. In doing so, they will
eliminate the fear of death as well as other fears, which tend to cloud
and frustrate the process of discovering our non-physical reality. |
During experiments on astral travel volunteers who were able to leave their body were wired up to an Electroencephalograph machine. The EEG instruments are monitered by electrodes placed on the volunteers scalp. These electrodes record the electrical potential of the celebrial cortyex. The following results were recorded : Alpha waves decrease. Betta waves increase, indicting the volunteer is awake. Electrodermal activity falls. Respiration rate increases. REM is absent. No Theta or Delta waves. The tests show something is happening, but not exactly what that is. Another test involved getting a person to project and getting him to reveal numbers that were written on a board in the next room. Seven numbers were used in this test. However the volunteer was at no stage able to recall the seven numbers. However he did on one occasion recall six numbers in the exact order. This in itself indicates something. In another test a female volunteer was able to recall conversations in another room. There is certainly a need for more testing over a long period with large groups of volunteers in a controlled situation so as to establish some sort of scientific opinion on this Research indicates that between 5 to 10 % of people have experienced an out of body experience. That amonuts to as much as 30 million in the USA alone. A further 85% of those people indicated that had the experience while resting or trying to sleep. In some cases an out of body experience has occured during high speed travelling. Both aircraft pilots and motor cycle riders have reported the experience. Some pilots reported finding themselves out of the plane trying to get back in. Yet at the same time being aware that still also in the plane and flying it. There are reported cases where the person has travelled a large distance
to another place and even held a conversation which has been confirmed
by those present. Technology that can help induce out of body experiences may also be
of service in helping people to develop their overall spiritual lives.
In the end, this can only be of benefit to the world. It's also an experience
that for whatever reason, people simply want to have. It's intriguing,
engaging, and many people have devoted huge efforts to practicing techniques
designed to bring them out of their bodies. The spiritual insights reserved
for those who have had the experience can be available to all. I believe that the purpose of life is experience. We must experience and explore for ourselves. We must discover and know, or be a slave to other people's opinions. Now being in the twenty-first century, the time has come for us to recognize our true potential and to explore beyond the prevailing beliefs and convictions. The time has come for us to discover the truth for ourselves. We have this opportunity today. Out-of-body experiences open the door to an incredible new frontier of human potential and discovery.
